January 2012

Dear High School Students:

It is my pleasure to welcome you as members of the Class of 2016 as you begin your high school career in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Our high schools offer a diverse range of rigorous courses and programs that will prepare you for the challenges of college and the workplace. The 2012-2013 High School Course Bulletin presents descriptions of courses that are designed to help you make the most of your academic experience. Please review this guide and consider it a useful tool as you and your school counselor work together to plan a learning experience that will challenge and engage you.

In addition to this bulletin, each high school’s website provides information about specific course options available in that school. You may access individual school websites by logging onto www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/ and proceeding to the appropriate school site. The information presented on these sites provides an overview of each school, including detailed program descriptions of magnet and signature programs, academies, and career-themed course pathways offered in MCPS.

MCPS employs outstanding, highly competent and dedicated teachers, administrators, and support staff to help you enhance your academic skills and prepare you to enter the college or career of your choice. Preparing you to become a productive citizen in a global society is a responsibility we take seriously. We encourage you to commit yourself to your studies with the same zeal and enthusiasm. Please take the opportunity to discuss the academic and career paths you want to explore with your parents, teachers, and counselor. These conversations will guide you as you select courses that will prepare you to achieve your future goals.

I encourage you to take rigorous and challenging courses in pursuit of your personal goals and extend my best wishes for your success as you prepare for the exciting and rewarding challenges that lie ahead.

Sincerely,

Joshua P. Starr, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
